How sessions run

Every session pairs a taught idea with a game where the child actually uses it. Beginners start with how the pieces move and finish their first week playing full games. Returning players work through openings, tactics and endgames at their own pace.

Where chess comes from

Chess grew out of chaturanga, played in India around the sixth century, travelled to Persia as shatranj, and reached Europe through the Islamic world. The rules we use today — the powerful queen, the long-range bishop — settled in Europe in the late fifteenth century. The first official world championship was played in 1886.

Programme structure

What the sessions actually cover.

Children join at the stage that suits them — nobody is held back waiting for a term to start.

  1. Fundamentals

How each piece moves, how to castle, how a game is won or drawn. A complete game by the end of the first week.

  2. Tactics

Forks, pins and skewers, drilled on the board until the child spots them without being told to look.

  3. Strategy

Controlling the centre, developing pieces, thinking about a position rather than the next move alone.

  4. Playing and reviewing

Full games against peers, then going back through the moves together to find where the game turned.

Why it matters

Beyond the board.

Chess rewards a habit most children are never taught directly: stopping to check what the other person is trying to do before you commit. It also gives them regular, low-stakes practice at losing — thinking clearly about why, and playing again.

Every child plays

We adapt pace, session length and communication to the child in front of us. Tell us what your child needs when you book and we will plan the session around it — no child is turned away.

What it costs
